Telling the Truth....
Republican Assault on Academic Integrity: The Story of
a Persecuted Professor
By Oneida J. Meranto
Denver, CO
In the fall of 2003, a major controversy erupted on our campus.
Conservative activist muckraker David Horowitz, a self-proclaimed
red diaper baby visited our campus and launched a diatribe against
liberal professors. Horowitz’ main message was that Democrats
outnumber Republicans on campuses by 10 to 1. This therefore demonstrates
that not only is there an absence of Republicans on college campuses
but it also suggests there's a conspiracy to keep them out. After
his visit, it didn’t take our small well-funded College Republicans
to respond to his plea and began to seek and expose (harass and
remove) faculty who are liberal-leaning. As these students scoured
the campus in search of professors their sights eventually fell
on me Director of Native American Studies and associate professor
of Political Science. Continue

Adding To The Ruckus!
Tradition, Responsibility, Our Future
By BJ McManama
Asheville, NC
As urban American Indians and along with our work for The People,
most of our efforts are concentrated on offering education and awareness
for non-Indians about the continued genocide of indigenous populations,
in the US and around the world. Frequently we are asked about our
culture(s) in regard to our traditions. People seem more interested
in the mystical or ceremonial aspects in hopes they will find answers
for their own confusion and lack of direction in their lives, than
they do present reality. Most only want to know the “good
parts” of being “Indian.” They love our regalia,
music, the sage and sweet grass, but when it comes to the more difficult
issues of responsibility and honor they shrink away mumbling to
themselves. Continue

Pier 57: The Bush Regime and NYPD Exercise Illegal Detention
Skills at RNC
By Brandon Batzloff
Editor, Free Voices
On August 31st, while the Republican National Convention (RNC) was
in full swing, protesters attempting to march throughout New York
City were not simply deterred from protesting, they were arrested
in massive sweeps. The police simply closed streets that people
assumed to be protesters were on and arrested everyone present.
In many cases they arrested New York residents who were simply going
about their daily business. Several arrests included underage people
who were not allowed to contact their families until nearly 24 hours
after being arrested. To everyone who cared about them, they simply
disappeared. By the end of the day the NYPD had arrested approximately
1800 people. It was the largest number of arrests in a single day
in New York history. Continue

Getting the Truth Out About 9-11
By Carol Brouillet
Palo Alto, CA
Protests in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and New York against the Bush
Agenda and the expansion of the CIA, coincide with Bush’s
decision to increase the CIA Director’s power by Executive
Order. On the eve of a Republican National Convention invoking 9/11
symbols, sound bytes and imagery, half (49.3%) of New York City
residents and 41% of New York citizens overall say that some of
our leaders "knew in advance that attacks were planned on or
around September 11, 2001, and that they consciously failed to act,"
according to the poll conducted by Zogby International. The poll
of New York residents was conducted from Tuesday August 24 through
Thursday August 26, 2004. Continue

Talking About....
Der Furor
Review by Prima Sai
Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Miami in the year 2040 is plagued by racism, gritty acid air, and
water you wouldn’t dare touch, let alone drink. Uneducated
millions are homeless and desperate. We watch our poor being herded
into sweatshops and into wars fought over lies. In a world inflamed
with anti-Americanism, zealots on all sides wreak their vengeance.
We hear some cry out for compassion, then watch them being silenced
as un-American, assassinated, or molested in secret prisons. And
we know we have to fight back. Continue

Last Word....
It seems like so many people and organizations were putting all
of their effort over the past few months into preparing for the
protests at the Republican National Convention (RNC). It was great
to see the dedication and hard work put forth by everyone. Now that
you are finished with this work, perhaps you are ready to write
a critical evaluation of the projects and actions your group was
focused on! Be sure to go back and read Grace End's article on how
to complete such an evaluation. The process is simple and when it
is published in Free Voices, you will be helping your sisters and
brothers everywhere by providing a base for them to work from.
It appears that i will be in new York for sometime, at least until
October for my arraignment after having been arrested at RNC. Depending
on the lawsuits that take place, i may be here for sometime. If
you are in New York or will be soon and would like to meet, please
let me know.
peace love victory,
