Telling the Truth....
On Activism and Class
By Jessica Rechtschaffer
Manhattan, NY
Fighting the system from within means solidarity with fellow inmates,
both activist and non-activist alike. It means not letting the police
and corrections having a divide and conquer approach when it comes
to race, class and reason for arrest. It also means using the courts
as a bully-pulpit at every turn to challenge the inequities in the
system at every turn. Fighting the system from outside means not
being intimidated by arbitrary arrests and threats of future jail
time. It means keeping up the pressure on government through protest,
direct action, letter-writing, talking to the media, and voting.

Laments and a Call for Dialogue

I am utterly disquieted by the events of this last week, so much
so that I can barely muster a response. What I feel most is a combination
of anger and exhaustion. I am left feeling as if I have been banging
my head against the wall, finding consolation and understanding
only from other 'fringe' radicals and foreigners-these seem to be
the only inhabitants of this nation who grasp the incredibly frightening
state of affairs is unraveling as we speak. Many of us feel deserted
by our country and one of the first things I did on November 3rd
was email my dear friend Ummni in Toronto regarding emigration to
Canada. Soon after this I joined friends in Union Square to rally
against the election and we were greeted by hundreds of police in
riot gear with M-16's in hand. It feels as if even the smallest
of rebellions/dissentions are being squashed by a hypervigilant
and overly aggressive show of force. Continue

As everyone expected the incidents of illegal electoral practices
that illegaly handed Mr. Bush the White House in 2000 have been
repeated on a much larger scale. According to the Election Incident
Reporting System, every state except North Dakota had reports of
elections gone wrong. Six states had more than 1,000 incidents reported.
Citizens across the country are still struggling with finding just
how extensive the election nightmare really is. Continue

The Godly Must be Crazy
By Glenn Scherer
Abortion. Same-sex marriage. Stem-cell research. U.S. legislators
backed by the Christian right vote against these issues with near-perfect
consistency. That probably doesn't surprise you, but this might:
Those same legislators are equally united and unswerving in their
opposition to environmental protection. Opposing abortion and stem-cell
research is consistent with the religious right's belief that life
begins at the moment of conception. Opposing gay marriage is consistent
with its claim that homosexual activity is proscribed by the Bible.
Both beliefs are a familiar staple of today's political discourse.
But a scripture-based justification for anti-environmentalism --
when was the last time you heard a conservative politician talk
about that? Continue Reading

Peace Was Never This Much Fun
By Brian Polk
Denver, CO
Is peace an unobtainable concept reserved for hippies and dreamers?
In our war torn world is there any hope? With wars covering the
globe, pop-hatred becoming more acceptable, and fundamentalism of
every ideology on the rise, the sad reality is clear: the peacemakers
aren't so blessed after all. So what the fuck? Is humanity really
spiraling down a self-destructive path straight to oblivion? Yes.
Is there a cure for all this nonsense? Yes. Continue
