Telling the Truth....
How to Survive an Apocalypse
By Brandon Batzloff
Editor, Free Voices
As most Americans were relaxed in front of their televisions eating fast food, the world was being shaken by increasingly critical situations. Many are now waking from their entertainment induced bliss to find that we are in serious trouble. Everything from the economy to the environment seems to be on the brink of collapse. The facts are so extreme and the realities so severe that many people are having a difficult time believing that things could be falling apart so quickly. We need to address the issues around us without skewing the facts as fantastic mythology. No more sugar coating of the truth or reliance on religious fanaticism. In other words, it is time to stand and face the world that we have created. Continue Reading
Left Out! How Liberals Helped Reelect George W. Bush
By Joshua Frank
Albany, NY
It is hard to believe what all the hype was about. As you now know, Howard Dean was a candidate from the Democratic mainstream. But, despite his ideological alignment with the New Democrats, he did take them on, hoping to disrupt their power-hold on Democratic politics. Dean was empowered. Not because he had a passion for progressive ideals, but because his followers led him down an alternative path. They saw Dean as a chance to challenge the Democrats for their centrist propensities. For that, Dean must be thankful, the Deaniacs made Dean a risk. Continue Reading
Oil is the Devil's Excrement
Solidarity With the People of Sudan (part 2 of 3)
By Laura Shaffer and grace End
Pittsburgh, PA
The government of Sudan is an independent dictatorship, but there are various avenues for external influence. Oil companies including ChevronTexaco are strongly interested in the region and want to extract newly-discovered oil from the Darfur region. Russia sells weapons to the government of Sudan. Sudan has loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which it has only recently been able to come into compliance with through oil profits. And if all else fails, there is the possibility of US military invasion, prompted by allegations of genocide. Continue Reading
Ron Artest Aint the Problem: A Revolutionary Take on "Fight Night in the NBA"
By Carl Dix
Brooklyn, NY
The replays have been run so many times the scene has become etched in my brain. The Indiana Pacers' Ron Artest laying a hard foul on Ben Wallace of the Detroit Pistons near the end of the game. Wallace coming back at him with two hands to the throat, and Artest walking away from this potentially explosive situation and laying down on the scorers' table. (I'm told this is an anger management tactic.) Then a cup full of some liquid comes flying out of the stands onto Artest and the brawl is on. Players going into the stands, fans running onto the court. Beer, chairs and punches being thrown. Endless video replays accompanied by seemingly endless articles and panels of talking heads supporting the suspensions NBA Commissioner David Stern hit Artest and several other Pacers with and talking about Artest as a troubled young man who needs to deal with his problems. Rape and Torture: American Soldiers at Work
By Samer Elatrash
Montreal, Canada
The video footage, which a news cameraman shot in Fallujah, Iraq, showed wounded Iraqi prisoners spread on the rubble-strewn floor of a mosque. American marines had captured the mosque a few days before, but the soldiers who were inspecting the prisoners had just entered the mosque. One prisoner lay flat on his stomach, his face turned from the camera. He would have looked like a corpse, but he convulsed as he hopelessly sucked air and dust into his dying body. A marine walked to him. "He's fucking faking he's dead", said the marine, who now stood at the dying man's feet. He aimed his assault rifle and pressed the trigger, sending a bullet into the prisoner's head and splattering the wall of the mosque with blood. Another marine consoled the murderer: "He's dead now."
