Telling the Truth.... Vision for 2005
By Brandon Batzloff
Editor, Free Voices
When we started Free Voices last year we were not certain what sort of impact the Networking For You Directory or Free Voices, eZine of the People would have. The response to these projects has been overwhelming. So overwhelming that it is time for us to reorganize and fine tune the organization to make it more efficient and accessible while continuing to expand. 2005 will bring greater efforts and a greater need for volunteers and funding to assist with this work. Tsunami Relief: Four Suggestions for Empowering Aid
By Starhawk
San Francisco, CA
Our hearts are grieving for the hundreds of thousands of victims of the December 26 tsunami, which may be the worst natural disaster in human memory. The scope of the tragedy is hard to imagine. Most of us have lost someone dear to us in the course of our lives. We know the anguish, the grief, the confusion and disorientation that comes with major lossóthe sense of having become in some ways a different person. But with personal loss, we can generally turn to our families, our friends, our communities for support and comfort. What must it be like to suffer the loss of half the community, of every means of livelihood, of whole families and whole, ancient ways of life, all at the same time? Continue Reading

Defending Pink
RE: On Pink and Practice (v 1 issue 18)
By Peter Reed
My first response to "On Pink and Practice" by Wendy Scher, as a queer "male" (for lack of a better term), was that I wasn't interested in her thoughts on how queer "men" express their culture. To be born biologically male and identify outside of binary gender systems and hetero-normative notions of sexuality is a unique experience. The pressure to conform to male standards set by society, while I'm sure is as painful and confusing as the pressure to conform to female standards, is simply different and a unique culture has formed out of that. If a heterosexual male wrote the things she wrote about queer "men", he would be told to stop imposing his ideas on the queer community, and rightfully so. Continue Reading

A Red Hot (and Blue) Mess
Review by Darryl Clark
Rochester, NY
The most exciting trend in feature films (it would be nice not to see it as a trend but it could turn out that way) is the revival of the film biography or, in People Weekly terms, the biopic. Since Mel Gibsonís killing about the life and death of Jesus Christ played earlier this year, there has been a torrent of films based on the lives of some interesting people. These films run the gamut from splashy and spectacular (The Aviator) to bleak and claustrophobic (Vera Drake) by way of good entertainment dragged out with pop psychology (Ray) and good entertainment based on psychology (Kinsey). But whatever gamut they run, filmmakers have a heavy responsibility when they create these films. If they falsify, they may get sued. Or, at the very least, they may piss someone off. Someone like me. Read on and you will learn how I felt about the worst film of 2004. Continue Reading
Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance
Review by Jericho Oaalls
Chicago, IL
The title alone sets the tone for this somber evaluation of the state of the world. Noam Chomsky lays out the facts in his usual straightforward way to show that persistance of the American Empire will most likely lead to the extinction of humanity. He begins by explaining the precarious situations the United States is in as a result of the War on Terror and the willingness of our government to abandon all rationale in the fight for global dominance.Continue Reading
