Telling the Truth....

Young Marines: Militarizing America's Children
By Brandon Batzloff
Editor, Free Voices

The Young Marines Association claims to be a program that teaches children good values and keeps them off drugs. It is made very clear in all of their literature that they are in no way involved with recruitment practices. As a program of the Department of Defense (DOD), through the Marine Corps, is this even possible? What exactly are the eight to seventeen year olds learning in this program and what effect will it have on our society? Continue Reading

Learning Discipline, The Marine Corps Way
By Angela Forest
Hampton Roads, VA

The Marine drill instructors walk among them, a hodgepodge of youth standing in several lines wearing white shirts and blue jeans. For the next two hours, these 26 young men and women - the youngest in elementary school, the oldest in high school - will speak and move only upon vocal command. Continue Reading

World Social Forum 2005: Social Change in Action
By Carol Sitrin
Porto Alegre, Brazil

Where can you find over 100,000 progressives from every continent (more than 5,000 of them journalists) coming together in open meetings to debate and formulate plans to build a society that is not dominated by capital or imperialism? While much of the world (corporate) media focuses on the World Economic Forum taking place January 26-30 in Davos, Switzerland, a world forum of quite another type celebrates its fifth conclave January 27-31 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The Coronation of Little Caesar
By James S. Berge
Chicago, IL

Driving into the capitol city at 9:00am on Thursday, I finally saw the Imperial State for what it is, a juggernaut of fascist corporatism bent on world domination. Armored police
cars, military vehicles, black helicopters (and white ones, what is it with this monochromatic obsession?), not to mention more armed security personnel than I have ever seen in one place. As an aside, I have never felt so unwelcome anywhere in this
country. Continue Reading

A Thank You Letter to the White House
By Robert Mills

Dear Mr. President: For the past 2-1/2 months I've been part of a collective effort to prove that your election on Nov. 2 was fraudulent, and indeed that your election in 2000 also. I'm not one of your supporters, needless to say. I stood among the protestors on Pennsylvania Avenue as your limousine sped by at about 30 m.p.h. on Jan. 20, holding a sign aloft that read, "NOV. 2---WORSE THAN WATERGATE." Continue Reading

The Day We Started Again: Our War for America
By Jared McBride

The Democratic Party is dead. Whether it scraps itself together or rebuilds for another election is irrelevant. We questioned its relevancy and ability to represent millions of Americans after the pathetic outcome of the last two elections (2000 and 2002), but with its utter annihilation delivered in the 2004 elections, we can question no more. Let me repeat, whether the Democratic Party picks itself up or not does not concern us. Continue Reading

Theatrical Opening for WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception in New York and Portland
By Danny Schecter
New York, NY

Our film WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception indicting media coverage of the Iraq war will be opening in New York, NY and Portland, OR on Friday evening February 4th at the locations listed below. Winning a theatrical run for a hard-hitting low budget film on the role of our media is not easy. Working with Cinema Libre (the same company that distributed OutFoxed) we have been showing the film in cinemas, festivals and screenings worldwide. The response has been fabulous, and coming just a few days after the US imposed "elections" in Iraq, WMD can't be more timely. Despite a few mea-culpas for pre-war reporting much of the TV coverage continues to ignore civilian casualties and war crimes. Continue Reading
